S.O.S!!

Dear journally bloggy type thingy,

I'M TERRIFIED!!

I've applied for a full time job at a youth organisation in my area. There's nothing wrong with my current part time job, but I'm starting to feel that I could be doing so much more, which is why I'm looking for full time now. Not only would it be terrific for my career, but I'd also have much more money, which I really need right now too.

Good news is, after handing in my application last week, I've been short listed for an interview on Tuesday, and an informant on the inside has told me that I've done really well as some people who already work in the building have been turned down. I'm so excited!

Only problem is, it's a two part interview. The first part is at 1pm, and I have to sit in front of a panel and do a 10 minute presentation on the challenges that young people face in their community. While this seems easy enough, I'm struggling to come up with anything productive. In the letter, they've said that they provide white board and power point for presentations, but I'm free to use 'Hand out cards' if I want, which means they're expecting a full presentation with hand outs and everything. What the hell am I going to do?? I've even asked the young people what challenges they feel they face daily, but they weren't much help.

I'm having a panic attack!!! LOL! Just kidding.

The second part of my interview is at 5:30pm and I'm going to be interviewed by a group of young people. I'm not sure what to expect from that so i'm not worrying as much....but the panel's gonna be a bitch!! lol! I keep going over it in my head over and over again, and it's a disaster everytime!

Any suggestions?? Please help me...S.O.S....Distress call...I'm on my hands and knees here..lol!

xxxxxxx

Steve, just be yourself and relax. They will be anxious for you to succeed if they feel you are the best canidate. You'll do fine, again relax and think twice before you give an answer. Good Luck, Bill

I definately think that some of the biggest challenges they face are sex and drugs. There is bound to be a web site or somewhere in your town that you can get some pamphlets or something??? Does that help ANY?? I hope so. Im sure you will do great...you are a born winner with a personality you gotta love!!!

I have no doubt that you will get up there and be charming yet matter of fact with them.No jokes- let them know you CARE about the youths and want to be a positive influence on them. Not a buddy but a guiding force.I just know you'll do well-your heart is in it.

hey babe...  you'll charm the pants of 'em...  hmmm.. would that relax ya or make you more nervous?  :::giggle::   Be yourself.  You have conviction, honesty, and most of all love and caring for the kids.. they'll see that.  Peer pressure, sex and drugs.. I'll think a bit more and if you need help just yell...   some say I can do a pretty mean graphic :)~
love ya

On your hands and knees, hmm? Well... ;-) *ahum* yes, about the problems... lol

Umm, I'm gonna have to go with D on this one: peer pressure (whether it be to drink, do drugs, have sex, graffiti things or commit other crimes, you name it) and then all of those things not in the realm of peer pressure, but individually.

Also, young people face a lot of discrimination when it comes to finding a job (people assume young people to be inexperienced or troublemakers) and in everyday situations-- a group of kids walks into a store and the owner eyes them because he/she thinks they're up to something when they're usually harmless.

Hope that helps, let me know if there's anything I can do!
Love your favorite "young person"/trusty sidekick,

Stevie just be your calm relaxed self ~ there must be an advisor at your job center who could give you some advice on doing a presentation ~ and info perhaps even leaflets to use for handouts ~ if that is the way you intend to go ~ I am sure you will do well with the second part of the interview being involved as you are with young people in your part time job ~ I wish you Good Luck with both interviews ~ Ally x

I know "be yourself" is easy to say, but sounds like you need a little directional aide, like - how bout making up index cards, one for each panel member, and list by topic the things kids face daily that can distract them from building their futures - headings like "Peer Pressure" and "Environment" and "Need for Attention" and "Wanting to Belong" and "Parents Don't Understand" things like that.  Under each heading write a few lines about what they face in that area.  You already know the answers.  It sounds like thats all this panel wants, something you created, thought about.  They'll all be on the same page as you talk about each heading.  Good luck sweetie.  xoxo CATHY

P.S. hey it's only 10 minutes, pass out the cards, talk a little on a few, then go!
